synchronous + asynchronous viewing
|
- The instructor may require concurrent participation of their distance students. In such cases it is required that apex students view the lecture at the time of the live broadcast. It is important to check with the instructor for attendance requirements.
- Web-registered students have the ability to view classes both as live streaming video and in an archived format with pause, rewind, and fast forward features available for convenient review. Archived lectures will remain posted for the duration of the semester, space permitting. However, it is imperative that distance students do not fall behind as the availability of archived lectures are intended for review purposes only and are not guaranteed. Class files will not be reposted or duplicated unless there are technical issues which are reported immediately by the affected student.

| business travel or illness |
- Students are required to keep current with the on-campus scheduling of lectures and associated course work. The instructor and proctor must be notified of travel absences in advance. It is important for communication between the distance student and his/her instructor to remain continuous throughout the semester so as to avoid unnecessary confusion and possible academic penalty.

| interactive audio connections |
- An audio telephone connection is available to remote students during live broadcasts. Instructors are notified of all connected students. Faculty may take a student’s participation via audio telephone connection into account when determining grades. For this reason, students who will not be participating live should notify the instructor beforehand.
- Each student should be familiar with the operation of the equipment at his/her viewing location.
- Any difficulties should be reported to the studio control room at [813] 974.3862 or the apex office at [813] 974.3783 immediately.
- Students attempting to check-in via telephone should do so within 5 minutes prior to the start of class. The title slate which appears before the lecture begins identifies the class to be broadcast and telephone number to call for connection to the audio interactive system.
- Some remote students may remain on-line for the entire class. In such cases, please do not disconnect prematurely as it will disrupt the class.
- It is required that students wishing to remain connected via telephone for the duration of the broadcast have a silent “hold” feature on their telephone. Students must engage the silent “hold” feature at all times except while asking a question or making a comment. Any misuse of the audio connection is cause for immediate disconnection.

| interactive audio connections for students watching on the web |
- Frequently web students are calling long-distance and/or do not have the required silent “hold” feature on their telephone and so cannot remain on the line for the duration of the lecture.
- Web students may call-in prior to the broadcast to let the instructor know they will be watching live
- Students watching on the web and wishing to participate via telephone are advised to call-in only at the time they wish to make a comment or ask a question. The audio operator will then establish a live audio connection with the studio classroom. At this time the student should inform the instructor of their name and proceed with their question or comment. When the student has finished with the question or comment they may disconnect.
- There is an inherent delay associated with watching live internet broadcasts. For this reason, web students will not hear their question or the instructor’s response over the streaming webcast for several seconds. This will make prolonged discussion via telephone connection impossible. Detailed questions/comments should be directed to the instructor via e-mail or calling them during their posted office hours so that a seamless dialogue can be achieved.
|
| interactive audio equipment |
- The use of improper equipment, including speakerphones or other instruments which introduce noise into the studio classroom, is cause for involuntary disconnection.
- If involuntary disconnection occurs, notify the audio operator when calling back, as he/she can trouble-shoot the cause of the interference with you. Extensive disruptions of this nature may negatively affect the ability of the student to interact with the class.
- We recommend that all live broadcast sites use a Duo-Fone ET-153, available at Radio Shack. Multiple Duo-Fones may be connected in a series with a "Y-adapter" plug, also available at Radio Shack. This equipment has an appropriate silent “hold” feature which must be engaged when student is not actively participating in discussion.
